Protecting Your Company Website
Ever notice that your computer downloads new security patches every couple of weeks? This is because hackers are constantly trying new ways to get into your computer and infect it with malware and viruses. The same is true with your website! It is important to make regular backups of your website and keep on top of the latest security patches and software upgrades.
Knowing what to upgrade:
With Joomla and WordPress websites, upgrading your sites framework to the latest version, or upgrading plugins can actually break your website if your site has customizations. Don't click the shiny red "Upgrade" buttons until you've spoken to your website designer to make sure that doing so won't actually break your site! This is also true with many popular plugins such as shopping carts, photo galleries and calendars.
Keep a good backup!
Most hosting companies keep server wide backups in case of hardware failure. However, this does not necessarily mean that individual websites are being backed up in case of a site hack or data loss. Most of the time, website restore points need to be set up by the site owner. Setting up an automated backup system or manually downloading a copy of your website is critical in keeping your website functioning as it should. If you haven't done a backup of your site recently. Do it now!
